Lighthouse Jazz in Collingwood

Music is alive and well in Collingwood, as Daniel McLaughlin and the Lighthouse Jazz Band put a local twist on renowned jazz standards. Beginning in 2015, the current quintet was originally founded by a father and son musical duo at the Lighthouse Point Community in Collingwood. The duo first began rehearsing out of the community rec room with Richard Notarfonzo on the piano and his son Matthew on the alto-saxophone. They were soon approached by a fellow Lighthouse Point resident and singer, Daniel McLaughlin. Even though Daniel, who had grown-up abroad, was unfamiliar with the jazz genre, persevered to learn the standards due to his love for music and singing. In only a matter of weeks, the trio performed their first concert before a packed crowd at the Lighthouse Point Georgian Room. Following the success of their first concert, the band continued to grow with the addition of bass guitarist and Lighthouse Point resident, Tim Debenham. Soon after, the quartet put on a Lighthouse Point Christmas concert and food drive in which over 300lbs of non-perishable food items were collected for the Collingwood Food Bank. With the experience of two concerts behind them, the band grew to its current size with the introduction of drummer and Collingwood local, Tony Petrella. Inspired by their love for music and Collingwood, the band was renamed to the ‘Lighthouse Jazz’ to reflect their humble beginnings.

Over the past three years, Daniel McLaughlin and the Lighthouse Jazz have begun to spread their swinging sound around the Collingwood area. The band has performed annually at the Collingwood Art Crawl, BMFA Studios, Collingwood Chartwell Residence, Canada 150 Celebration, and foundations for the Nottawasaga Lighthouse Preservation Society. The Lighthouse Jazz has also been seen at the Alpine Ski Club and at The Corner Café and Grill in Thornbury. Personally, each member has gown musically by building their repertoire and embracing new instruments like the tenor-saxophone, guitar, fretless bass, and jazz drum-set.

The Daniel McLaughlin and Lighthouse Jazz Band will be performing next at the Alpine Ski Club’s Family Day Apres on Saturday February 16, 2019 from 3:30 PM – 5:30 PM. The quintet also has a Facebook Page, @DMLighthouseJazz, which features numerous photos, videos, and recordings. For booking information, the band can be contacted through Facebook, e-mail (, or phone (647-299-4214). Until then, the Lighthouse Jazz will continue to spread their love of jazz music while giving back to the community which they all call home.
