Grey Heron Natural Designs carries unique clothing and stylish accessories from the olde Viking worlds. “We pride ourselves on carrying and array of natural fibre fashions suitable for your business or pleasure needs. You can build your wardrobe with us and be assured of a fabulous selection of current European designs to choose from.”

The owner of the Grey Heron store is Karen Farmilo, and she often is asked how she managed to find such a well-matched and interesting group of clothing designers and manufacturers. It all started with the five years that Karen lived in Denmark, from 2000-2005. While there, she found that many of the Scandinavian clothes were of very interesting designs, of extremely high quality, and ideally suited to the climate and social situation. In Denmark, as in many Northern countries including Canada, seasons change dramatically, weather changes in an instant, and if nothing else, people are moving from cool to warm to cool again. This supports a clothing design and style utilizing natural fibres (for breathability, comfort and environmental responsibility) and a layered look allowing clothing to be added or removed as the person moves from cool to warm, such as outside to inside, car to beach, shopping street to sophisticated restaurant. The clothing is designed for durability and classic, enduring looks, accented with color and accessories: classic, elegant, timeless. The value of the style is in the quality.

Karen purchased and wore clothing from many of the designers that she now carries in the store. Those designers that provided comfort and durability with style and individuality she approached with the idea of opening a store on her return to Canada, and providing the designers an exclusive outlet in North America. Most of these designers are well known locally, or through Europe, but have never or very rarely sold to anyone in North America. They are exclusive to the Grey Heron.

Finally, it should be known that Karen is very well aware how hard it is to find sophisticated, individualistic clothing for the larger woman. Many styles and purchases by these “real women” are uncomfortable, cramped and, let’s face it, not ideal. Again, these designers that Karen has chosen have a wide range of clothing for sizes 12-24 that provide all the comfort benefits of natural fibres, with style and flair that give every woman the chance to feel like a Queen, or at least a Duchess. Time and time again, Karen’s customers have told her things like “ I wore this outfit all day and into the evening, never felt over-warm or out of place, and received compliments as never before. The flexibility of the outfit, the comfort and style are wonderful.” This is a result of Karen knowing the designers, and ensuring that the clothing is manufactured either at the designer’s site or under the direct supervision of the designer. Classic, elegant, timeless quality—that is Karen’s philosophy for the Grey Heron.

“Our philosophy is simple, all of our designer lines can be found here all year round. You can always choose additional fashions to complement your current wardrobe. By starting with quality essentials you then can accessorise with your favourite coloured scarf, cloche or an awesome Adax leather handbag.”

Karen introduces her clients to an exclusive group of Scandinavian and Irish designers. Each design is created with a flair and attention to detail.

“From the shores of Ireland the Merino wool coats, jackets and sweaters arrive. Our Donegal Tweed ¾ coat will keep you warm and fashionable for years to come. Add an Irish hand woven mohair scarf, a woollen cloche and you are set for a winter walk. Let’s not forget the Connemarra wool socks and Danish felt boots to keep out the chills.

Our Baltic woollens arrive boasting of design, warmth and splendour. The Swedish woollen or felted wool skirts are simple in design, but when paired with the asymmetric woollen jacket, you have a wonderful outfit.

If denim is a favourite of yours, you must see our Modea denim and marine fashions. “It’s the best fitting jean I’ve ever had” so my customers tell me.

Accessorise your clothing with one of our “BarbMarla” hand painted silk scarves. Choose from our stunning jewellery collection by Anne-Marie Chagnon. Maybe an interesting Baltic amber and silver necklace would be more to your liking. We also carry the Scandinavian design “Trollbead” jewellery line. Check out our line up of Tilley Endurable products. Their unsinkable toppers are a sure hit in all weathers.

Our eclectic group of designers (Danish, Swedish, Faroese, Irish, German, Dutch and Scottish to name a few) create the ultimate in fashions.

Let us help you create your own style our comfortable surroundings. We will custom order additional colours or designs to suit your needs.

“Express your individuality” when shopping at Grey Heron Natural Designs.”
