Ashanti Coffee Enterprises has opened a specialty coffee roasting business in Collingwood, offering premium specialty coffee, roasted fresh to order in small batches for retail and wholesale customers.
David Wilding-Davies, one of the partners behind Ashanti, explains what sets this coffee apart from other specialty roasters' products:
“Most other specialty coffee leaves the farm gate and passes through a lot of hands before it reaches the cup - from grower to a local broker, then an exporter, a shipper, an importer, a green broker, a roaster, a retailer and finally the consumer. What's special about this coffee is that we grow it on our own farm, import it ourselves, and roast it fresh right here in Collingwood – we have control of it from farm to finished product, and it results in a brilliant cup of coffee.”
David and his wife Amy moved to Africa 10 years ago to pursue a dream, buying Ashanti Coffee Estate in the Eastern Highlands of Zimbabwe. Their hard work, the rich soils and ideal coffee growing altitude soon yielded award winning coffee.
David and Amy's philosophy was to grow a great coffee in harmony with nature and the local community. Half the farm is left in its natural state to conserve the indigenous forest and provide wildlife habitat for four hundred different species of birds, monkeys, small antelope, and leopards. The farm employs and provides housing, nutrition and educational benefits for two hundred and fifty permanent workers and their families, and provides part time employment at picking time for another six hundred people.
David and Amy and their partners Dave and Lorella Brennen knew the area market was ready for this coffee and decided to bring the product home.
But is the coffee good? Internationally recognized coffee expert Erna Knutsen says:
"This is a beautifully balanced coffee... it is like the return of an old friend."
Available at the roastery and at selected retailers in the area.
