Blue Mountain Resort, in partnership with Sirbikealot Racing, hosted the second-annual East Coast Open Mountain Bike Race and Expo this past weekend.  Riders from all skill levels took to the trails at Blue Mountain from August 12-14 to compete for Canada’s largest purse of more than $15,000 in cash and prizing.

The event was a huge success, with participants from as far as South Africa traveling to Blue Mountain to compete in this annual event.

Blue Mountain is home to the largest downhill Mountain Bike facility in Ontario.  The 226 metres of vertical, and terrain varying from open Canadian Shield to wooded single-track trails, made for some exciting action, while Blue Mountain’s trail and events team worked tirelessly to ensure that trails were in pristine shape for the competitors.

This unique, three-day competition encompassed a new concept in Mountain Bike racing – a collaboration between Cross-Country (XC) and Downhill (DH) disciplines and is the only race on the East Coast to incorporate both disciplines.  The 2011 East Coast Open also saw the return of the Dual Slalom event and featured a fun XC Kids Race.  In addition to the Pro-Elite category, the East Coast Open included Amateur and Junior categories that saw a number of local riders compete.

East Coast Open Results

Lapierre XC Race
The XC Races took place on Saturday, with a new marathon-style course that started at the bottom of the Orchards trail area and made its way up the Grind to an eight km loop across the top of the hill.  Canadian National team champion Mikaela Kofman took home the women’s top spot and East Coast Open Shield, while Norco Factory Team rider Andrew Watson was the fastest male rider of the day in the men’s Senior-Elite category.

X-Fusion Dual Slalom Race
The Dual Slalom Races were highly anticipated and didn’t disappoint!  A throwback from the 90s, this was the first time a dual slalom has come to Blue Mountain in 15 years.  Two riders race head-to-head down parallel tracks through dirt corners and over jumps in an adrenaline filled race.  Spectators lined the course with cowbells, and 90s tunes set the stage, as the announcers played up the action.  Brad Zdriluk and Kristen Smart took home the top spots in the men’s and women’s categories in this legendary event.

POC Downhill Race
Sunday was the kick-off of the DH Races.  Spectators lined the finish corral, but all eyes were on the hot seat – a freshly painted, fully working Zamboni (also known as the Zamborgini).  The North Face was right there ‘cooling off’ the top riders with a water gun as they sat on the proverbial thrown.  Local rider Sam Measures captured the Senior Sport division with a time that was comparable to the top racers in Senior-Elite, while local legend Mike Towers claimed second in the Masters Sport category.  Sidney Slotegraaf and Kristen Courtney took home top spots and East Coast Open Shields in the men’s and women’s Senior-Elite categories.

Redline Fun Kids Race
The XC Kids race was a huge hit and one of the best spectator events of the weekend!  Kids as young as three made their way around the loop with parents running alongside encouraging them every step of the way.  This was a fun event filled with future stars.
