|With less than three weeks to go, the lineup for this year’s WORDSTOCK is firmly in place. Off the Page, WORDSTOCK’s opening night cabaret-style event, is being hosted by Canadian funnyman and three-time Gemini Award winner Seán Cullen. Guests include the Toronto Poetry Slam team, puppeteer Rob Mills and his alter-ego Ruffus the Dog, author Lee Maracle, Native drummer John Somosi, visual artist Césan d’Ornellas Levine, and Nia dancers.|
Kitchener indie-rock band Snack! rounds off the evening’s festivities. Off the Page takes place Friday, September 9, at 8:00 pm.
Off the Air, another exciting WORDSTOCK event, features CBC radio personalities Terry O’Reilly and Brian Goldman. O’Reilly, host of the popular marketing show The Age of Persuasion, will present “The Power of Storytelling”, Saturday September 10 at 10:30 am. Goldman, a veteran ER physician and host of White Coat, Black Art, will talk about what REALLY goes on in hospital emergency rooms. Dr. Goldman’s presentation takes place Saturday at 1:00 pm.
The author line-up is nothing short of spectacular, with Kelley Armstrong, Giles Blunt, Randy Boyagoda, Trevor Cole, Seán Cullen, Camilla Gibb and Wayne Johnston. These best-selling authors will discuss – and do readings from – their latest works. Poets include Brendan McLeod, Judy Lowry, Bonnie Gardiner, Antony Christie, John Robert Colombo, and last year’s runaway hit, the Toronto Poetry Slam team.
A series of workshops will be taking place on Saturday, September 10. Facilitators include Christine Cowley, Stuart Ross, Dorris Heffron and Karen Hood-Caddy. These workshops cover everything from tackling creative roadblocks, to writing your memoir, to self-publishing, and becoming a successful writer.
There are teen workshops, featuring calligraphy, mixed media, and of course, writing. New York Times bestselling author Kelley Armstrong will lead a workshop directed specifically towards teens. Kelley will share tips, tricks, do’s, and don’ts; all geared towards helping young people find that elusive inspiration.
With guest appearances from Curious George and Spot the Dog, Dr. Seuss time with local celebrity readers, Paul Behnke performing, and events like the Great Downtown Word Hunt and Eat Your Words, kids will be able to engage all five senses, and learn while having fun.
Tickets for Off the Page are $27 each, and all Saturday events are free. Full details are available at the Wordstock website.
