A Former NHL Hockey Player & a US Olympian are battling to win $100,000 towards a future without breast cancer! Last Sunday Former NHL Hockey Player, Scott Thornton (a local Collingwood resident) and his partner US Olympian Amanda Evora secured their spot in the final three on this season of Battle of the Blades.
Thornton who spent 18 seasons in the NHL has spent the last couple months competing on the show which pairs retired NHL hockey players with figure skaters to raise money for their charities. Last Sunday was Olympic week on the show, Thornton and Evora skated to Bolero, a piece that saw Torvill & Dean receive perfect 6.0's across the board for artistic impression at the 1984 Olympics. It was no different for Thornton & Evora who after performing the first ever triple twist on the show, received 6.0's from all the judges to secure their place in the final 3.
"I am extremely happy with our performance on Sunday. The competition is very tight this season, so to make it to the final three is amazing. Amanda and I have broken new ground with some of our elements, and to receive a perfect score, made us very proud." said Thornton.
Guest Judge Olympic Gold Medalist David Pelletier told the pair that he's seen thousands of triple twists and he would rate theirs in his top 10.
Evora said, "It was a personal goal of mine to break new grounds on the Battle of the Blades. What better way than to try out elements that have never been done before on the show. Skating to Bolero, executing a triple twist, and getting perfect 6.0 scores from all the judges is literally a dream come true especially after only skating 8 weeks together. I could not see myself being able to do triple twist with any other hockey player and I am thankful to have Scott as my partner. Looking forward to the final performances and seeing it as a time to celebrate our skating together."
This Sunday, November 10th the final 3 pairs will take to the ice to perform two numbers. A favourite from the past 6 weeks along with a new routine. After the show voting will open, the judges scores no longer count, 100% of fan voting will determine who the winner of this season of battle of the blades is. Voting will remain open until Tuesday November 12th at 8pm.
"We still have an opportunity to raise $100,000 for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation as a team, and this is what keeps us motivated. We are skating to Bolero again this weekend as our reprise performance, as well as Breathing Underwater by Metric. Should be a fun week, and really looking forward to next sunday." said Thornton.
Amanda Evora and Scott Thornton need your support and votes. Both are skating in support of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, should they win, CBCF will receive $100,000. Tune in to CBC at 8pm on Sunday November 10th, then head to Battle of the Blades to vote. You can earn up to 50 votes by answering the challenge question.
