TOUR DE BLEU (Posted On: Wednesday, October 08, 2008)

Inspired by our Bike to Work Day held earlier in July, Blue Mountain Resort launched its first-ever Tour de Bleu, an 8-week employee bike program. Over the course of two months, Tour participants were encouraged to replace their driving with riding as much as possible throughout their everyday lives.

Following a successful bike to work/pancake breakfast event, Joe Barron, a member of the Resort’s Green Team, suggested the resort hold a longer-term bike to work program over the remainder of the summer.

With the Tour de France in progress at the time, it was only natural that a Tour de Bleu be created. A small committee of employees formed and they quickly organized the resort’s first-ever Tour de Bleu with over 40 employees participating!

The Tour ran for 8 weeks from late July through mid-September. Employees were encouraged to ride their bikes to work, to get groceries, to rent movies and for any other tasks that would typically use a car in an effort to reduce emissions, save money on gasoline, enjoy the active outdoor lifestyle that the resort embraces, and encourage active transportation.

Tour de Bleu participants collectively travelled over 9,700 kilometres (representing over 1,200 one-way trips) by bike over the 8-week period. As a result, the group has also avoided the production of over 2 tones of carbon dioxide emissions (based on each bike trip replacing a 10L/100km fuel efficient car).

The resort’s Planning and Environmental Specialist and Tour de Bleu participant, Lindsay Ayers, commended the group on their effort, “It has been such a positive employee experience for so many reasons. The Tour de Bleu helped to eliminate the common perception that biking takes too long or is too much work. Most employees found biking trips to be shorter than they had anticipated and many admitted that, as the riding became more habitual, they started thinking twice before simply grabbing the car keys to run an errand. We really hope to continue this program in future years and see participant numbers increase as the Tour gains momentum.”
