This week (Feb 2nd to Feb 5th ) on the 10th Anniversary of the 1997 World Winter Special Olympics International Games that were partially hosted by Collingwood, local athletes are competing in Ontario Special Olympics Provincial Winter Games.
Skiers from the Blue Mountain Special Olympic Alpine team will compete at Beaver Valley Ski Club on Feb 2nd and 3rd.
Success in these races will qualify them for the 2008 Special Olympic National Winter Games in Quebec City 2008 and that event is a qualifier for the next 2009 World Games in Boise Idaho.
Representing Blue Mountain in the Provincial Games are 11 racers who qualified at a regional alpine meet at Devils Glen. Christine Arnott, James Binsfeld, Robert Edmonds, Erin McNulty, Evan Morrice, Matthew Poste, Jeremy Robertson, Robin Shuter, Brian Sproule. Kayla Tateyama, and Michael Young

Under this code of the Special Olympians, spectators are welcome to come and experience the joy of these athletes as they ski for their team and personal achievement.
Currently the Blue Mountain Special Olympics Alpine Race Team is the largest program in Canada. For more than 10 years Blue Mountain Resort has sponsored this team and this year, with the help of more than 40 volunteers, up to 30 athletes train and compete.
Opening Ceremonies for the 2007 Provincial Winter Games take place February 1st at 7:00 pm Bayshore Community Centre in Owen Sound – Admission is free but historically, seats fill up quickly. Alpine events begin Friday and Saturday morning around 9:30 at Beaver Valley Ski Club – awards ceremonies approximately 3:00 pm on both days. Come on out. Watch some great athletes complete and cheer on your local team.
