|The Shipyards, a master-planned residential community in Collingwood, will give local residents their waterfront back on July 1 after more than 100 years of blocked access due to industrial development. The Shipyards, located in downtown Collingwood on Georgian Bay, was previously home to the Collingwood Shipyards and has not been accessible to the public since the early 1900s.|
“The Shipyards community pays tribute to Collingwood’s proud shipbuilding heritage with street and building names that tell a story of our past,” says local historian and author, Christine Cowley. “A stroll to the end of North Maple Street will take visitors to a part of the shoreline held at bay, behind shipyard gates, for over a hundred years. Walking in the footsteps of past generations – it’s the way history should make us feel.”
Well-versed in the revitalization of brownfield sites, developers FRAM Building Group and Slokker Real Estate Canada are known for converting unusable land into award-winning waterfront communities. Their first project together, Port Credit Village in Mississauga saw the transformation of the historic St. Lawrence Starch Works into a thriving neighbourhood of more than 412 homes and 40,000 square-feet of retail shops and offices.
The Shipyards has already been recognized for its environmental efforts and was named ‘Best Large-Scale Project’ by the Canadian Urban Institute (CUI) at the 2009 Brownie Awards. The awards recognize leadership, innovation and environmental sustainability in brownfield redevelopment across Canada.
In conjunction with the Town of Collingwood, the July 1celebration will be open to the public to commemorate The Shipyards’ waterfront redevelopment which includes a public promenade, open-air amphitheatre, fish habitat and more than seven acres of green space connected to walking, biking and hiking trails.
