Grade 11 Pretty River Academy student wins silver at National Science Fair in Truro, N.S. During the week of May 12th-20th, Pretty River Academy student Sarah Cheeseman attended the Canada Wide Science Fair in Truro, Nova Scotia. Sarah’s project, titled Life After Death has been a two-year experiment studying the decomposition of human flesh. During this time, Sarah has received incredible support from the entire school community.
“Sarah is an outstanding student and member of our school community. She exemplifies Strive for Excellence.” Said Mark Redmond, the Science Department head at Pretty River.
Many people wonder how Sarah came up with such a unique project idea. “I have always had a strong interest in forensic science, and I’m an avid CSI fan. I initially began this project with the thought of developing and utilizing various forensic techniques which can be used in justice systems worldwide.”
Sarah has received exemplary results with her silver medal and peer innovation award from the National Science Fair. Sarah was also awarded a Sponsor’s Choice Award at Queen’s Park last week.
On her travels to Nova Scotia, Sarah met many interesting people, and thoroughly enjoyed spending her time with the six other students from Simcoe County as well as two delegates.
Simcoe County Regional Fair organizer Alison Davidson traveled with the students to Truro. “[Sarah] is an exceptional young woman and Pretty River Academy should feel very proud of her. Not only did she achieve amazing academic success with her silver medal and peer innovation award, but she also conducted herself with grace, kindness, and unmasked enthusiasm the entire week. What fun it must be to teach her every day.”
Sarah is overwhelmed by the amount of support she has received from her parents, friends, and school community. “I still can’t believe how amazing everyone has been to me. We really are one big family here at Pretty River!”
The principal of Pretty River Academy, Roberta Murray Hirst is very proud of Sarah and her successes.
“We are all proud of Sarah and the person she is. Sarah diligently puts forth her best efforts and is always a positive leader and mentor in our school community. Sarah exemplifies what students at Pretty River strive to accomplish everyday. We are thrilled to share her successes and look forward to supporting her future endeavors.”
Sarah was also honoured at the Pretty River Academy Awards Ceremony on June 14th receiving three additional awards. She was presented the awards for Science overall, Top Science Fair project at Pretty River Academy, as well as the Pride Award for her grade.
Congratulations Sarah. We are anxious to know what your Science Fair project will be for next year.
