Enjoy a day of curling and support Breaking Down Barriers by registering for the 4th Annual Rockin’ the House Curling Bonspiel.  If you’ve always wanted to try curling but were shy, this is the perfect event for you.  You get to curl, wearing a costume (in case anyone you know recognizes you) and you support a fantastic cause in our community.

Rockin’ the House is an annual Curling Bonspiel and fundraiser in support of Breaking Down Barriers. Since 1985, this registered charity has been providing programs and services that help individuals with any kind of disability live independently in the community. The agency also provides training and education to the community about disability issues.

The 4th annual Rockin’ the House will be held on Saturday February 27th from 8 am to 5:30 pm at the Curling Club of Collingwood.

The entry fee is $50 per person or $200 per team. This includes a continental breakfast, lunch provided by Boston Pizza and two games for each team.

This fun filled day gives Breaking Down Barriers’ regular team of wheelchair curlers a chance to show off their skills. Curlers of all abilities are welcome. There will be a huge silent auction and a 50/50 draw.

Twenty-four teams will play two six end games each. The first draw begins at 9 am and the second draw begins at 10:45 am. The first, second and third place teams in each draw will be awarded with gold, silver or bronze medals and the overall tournament winners will be awarded the tournament trophy. There are also great prizes for best team name and best team costume so we encourage participants to get creative.

The agency is pleased to announce the inaugural year of the Marie Banks Memorial Award. This award will be presented to the top individual and top team fundraisers at the 2010 Rockin’ the House Bonspiel. Marie passed away in May 2009. She was one of Breaking Down Barriers best known volunteers and consumers.   She was an avid athlete and volunteer. Marie was a member of BDB’s Board of Directors and fundraising committee at the time of her death.  She was dedicated to raising funds for Breaking Down Barriers so the agency is honouring her memory with this award. There will be a plaque hung on the wall in the office with Marie’s photo and the names of the winners of this award. The winners will also receive a trophy.

In order to win this prestigious award, all you have to do is ask your friends, family, co-workers and neighbours to sponsor you for participating in the Bonspiel.

The deadline for entry is Friday February 19th but spots are filling up quickly so register now! You can register on line using your credit card at or you can call Tracey at 445.1543 ext 305.

If you would like to learn more about sponsorship opportunities for this event or donate an item for the silent auction, please call Andrea at 445.1543 ext 300.  Breaking Down Barriers gratefully acknowledges the support of, 97.7 The Beach, Boston Pizza, Rogers TV, The Curling Club of Collingwood, The Connection and Off The Cuff Marketing.
