Playaway audiobooks (Posted On: Monday, February 28, 2011)

Reading a book, whether in the car, on the playground or while working out, just got easier thanks to the introduction of Playaway audiobooks at the Collingwood Public Library. These new audiobooks require no cassettes, CDs or downloads, meaning customers merely select an available title off the shelves, plug in their headphones and start listening.

Similar to an MP3 player, each Playaway holds an entire audiobook regardless of the book’s length. Playaways are chaptered like actual books for easy navigation, with automatic bookmarking to remember where the reader stopped listening. The device runs without the need for electricity, with the Library providing rechargeable batteries for each unit. As an added bonus, Playaways feature five narration speeds to allow customers to listen at their own pace.

“We’re introducing Playaways into our collections to make reading more simple, fun and flexible for our customers. We’ve noticed an increased demand for audiobooks as customers’ busy lives often call for alternative methods for reading.  Providing a pre-programmed MP3 player is an ideal solution,” says Alicia Subnaik-Kilgour, supervisor, children’s and teen services.

The Library is introducing Playaways to its collections as a pilot project. The decision to add the units to its permanent collections will be based on customer feedback. Customers may voluntarily fill out a brief survey upon returning the Playaway.

“We chose Playaways because of the wide assortment of titles available from new releases to classics. Plus, Playaways are known for their superb audio quality and portability. Coupled with ease of use, we’re confident that everyone can benefit from this device, regardless of their comfort level with technology,” says Subnaik-Kilgour.

The Library selected a variety of titles for children, teens and adults in both fiction and non-fiction. Launching in early March, the pilot project runs for three months.
