Harold Arlen (February 15, 1905 - April 23, 1986) was an American composer of popular music, having written over 500 songs, a number of which have become known worldwide. In addition to composing the songs for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz (lyrics by E.Y. Harburg), including the classic "Over the Rainbow", Arlen is a highly regarded contributor to the Great American Songbook.
"It is ironic to me that the music from The Wizard of Oz is known by almost everyone but few have any idea who the composer was. Harold Arlen flew under the radar (there are probably many theories why), even though he also wrote over 500 songs in the Great American Songbook (The Great American Songbook, also known as "American Standards", is the canon of the most important and influential American popular songs and jazz standards from the early 20th century.) I believe this is the beauty of this show; people know the music but will delight in learning about the man who was the composer. Adrian Marchuk will definitely be highlighting Arlen's other works, too. He does this by speaking about the life of Arlen (accompanied by a slide presentation) along with a well orchestrated concert. He brings to us a cast of four outstanding and highly respected cabaret and musical theatre artists. They are all gorgeous and their voices are second to none! With Chris Tsujiuchi as Musical Director (and with his fantastic band), the audience is in for a real musical treat! I think the young faces on the stage and their prevalence in today's Toronto music scene will make Arlen's music available and interesting to a 2017 audience. Most of all, they are contemporary performers breathing new life into classic songs. They are highly skilled and as we know, great musical performance is ageless." Erica Angus
