NordicFest Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Festival
February 6, 2010

When you think of Nordic skiing you may recall the last time you eagerly strapped on your boards, anxious to demonstrate your stamina. Your enthusiasm quickly waned as a 65-year old Scandinavian dude in running tights and a neon tank top glided by you at Mach speed without breaking a sweat.

If that sounds like the last time you hit the trails for some good old fashioned cross country, it might be time to check your ego at the door and give it another go – and we’ve got just the opportunity.

On February 6th the first annual NordicFest Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Festival will take place at Scenic Caves in the Town of Blue Mountains. From 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. families, first-timers and über-athletes alike will strap on skis and snowshoes and take to Scenic Caves’ spectacular escarpment trails for a day of outdoor fun – on the horizontal!

The event, which is being put on by Get Out There Magazine, will feature an outdoor expo where major ski and snowshoe manufacturers (including Atlas Snow Shoes, Rossignol, Salomon, Madshus, Swix, Fischer and GV Snowshoes) will showcase the latest gear and the public will have an opportunity to test out skis and snowshoes right on the trails. Free hot chocolate, informative learn-to-ski and snowshoe clinics, a BBQ lunch and activities for kids will keep everyone entertained – both on and off the trails.

“We’re bringing the ‘cool factor’ back to Nordic,” says Get Out There Magazine’s president Marissa Schroder. “We’ve seen a huge surge in interest in both cross country skiing and snowshoeing over the last few years and we wanted to create a fantastic event that would reintroduce people to these activities. There’s an element of nostalgia for a lot of people. Many of us did these sports as kids. With innovations in gear and outdoor apparel, they’re even more enjoyable today.”

A discounted trail pass will be available at Scenic Caves for NordicFest. Regularly $18, passes will be reduced to $10 and kids under 7 are free. Click Here to print a coupon to take advantage of the discount rate. The first 200 people to RSVP for the event to will receive a Nordic gift bag (1 per family/couple) featuring product samples and discounts for area attractions, including specials from Le Scandinave Spa and Plunge, the water park at Blue Mountain.

If you’ve got your own skis or snowshoes, bring them. Rentals will be available at Scenic Caves on a first-come, first-served basis and demo fleets for testing will be on hand from the manufacturers.
