After completing the Rome Marathon with Team Diabetes in 2005, I never dreamed my seventeen year old son would be going for the gold in Iceland the following year- Miracles do happen...
It all began with my husband having to bow out of doing the Rome Marathon 2006 due to some injuries. We had already raised some funds for diabetes, it was a let down for all. Having seen his grandma suffer from diabetes for years Brandon found something inside himself and decided to step up to the plate, he would do the marathon! I was in shock.. this is your average teenager, never offering to clean his room let alone do a marathon for diabetes. He convinced me that he could and would do it!
Because the Rome marathon was during his school year and he was in the last year of highschool, he could not participate however he could do the Iceland Marathon with Team Diabetes.
Brandon is only 17, the rules state he has to be 18 in order to do the full marathon so he is doing the 1/2, 21 kms is not a little walk about town, he is doing big things and I am proud of him.
It takes a lot to step up to this plate, the persistent training and the dedication to raise monies for Canadian Diabetes Association, giving back to his community.
To date Brandon, along with family and friends has raised $5000. His goal is $6000.
If you can imagine it, it can happen.....Firehall Pizza Company is holding a week of Canadian Diabetes Association fundraising helping Brandon to reach his goal (July 11th-16th) Feel free to drop in and support this local youth with a donation, every bit counts.
Brandon will be leaving for Reykjavik August 16th along with fellow team diabetes members from across Canada. The actually race is on August 19th. Please wish him luck!
