Local Clansman honoured at Fergus Scottish Festival and Highland Games. After several years absent from these games, a vibrant and energetic re-entry was anticipated with great excitement by the participants, partly because this was the first time the co-commissioners, Don Nicolson and Hugh Nicholson, had hosted a Clan tent.

The weather on Saturday morning was hot and sunny as the tent was prepared. Canadian Commissioner, Michael Nicholson, drove down from Ottawa and was a great help all day, especially with his excellent knowledge of Clan history. Jeremy Nicholson, North American president, also arrived to assist. Mary Lou Nicolson-Klimek, Western Canada Commissioner dropped in and stayed most of the day.

The day progressed smoothly and the tent was fairly busy most of the time. Large numbers of people not associated with the Nicolson name still found the displays very interesting and many stopped to ask questions, which were answered to the best of our collective abilities.

Several Clan members came around to renew old acquaintances. Several new members filled in applications and joined Clan MacNicol.

Late in the day, a small parade of people, led by a piper came through the Avenue of Clans and surprisingly stopped in front of our tent. We were most surprised, but very delighted when John Campbell, the Clans Commissioner announced that out of the 50 odd tents in the avenue, Clan MacNicol had won first prize for the BEST CLAN TENT.

A gift box was then presented to Don Nicolson, and he was directed to open the box but to be aware of a stipulation. Upon opening the box, the prize turned out to be a most beautiful Czeck crystal decanter. Then the stipulation was explained. “The decanter had to return next year,- FULL.

After many congratulations, Jeremy announced that as far as he knew, this was a first for Clan MacNicol. So that made us all doubly proud.

After closing down the tent for the night, the clan members retired to a local restaurant, The Breadalbane Inn, for an excellent meal, hosted by Jeremy.
