Quest for Fitness – Only 44.8 to go! (Posted On: Wednesday, May 06, 2009)

It’s the end of week six of my Quest for Fitness and I’m down 15.2 pounds.  That’s 25% of my goal reached already.  I have actually lost 18.2 pounds of fat and gained 3 pounds of muscle.  That’s really cool.  Looking back, it seems like the past 6 weeks have zipped by.  Maybe it’s because the dreaded weekly Friday weigh-in day seems to come very quickly each week.

Even though I know I am doing everything right and embracing anything and everything that will help me reach my goal the fastest, I still always feel nervous on Friday mornings. What if with all of this work (and it is work…no doubt about it) there is no change this week?

After six weeks of absorbing everything I have learned like a sponge – I ask a lot of questions – I am more convinced than ever that after COMMITMENT the number one next most important thing is EDUCATE YOURSELF.  If you understand how your body works then you understand what choices to make and why they are so important.  What I have learned is that a whole bunch of simple choices grouped together can result in a huge change.

It is a very satisfying feeling to know that the changes you make result in a positive outcome.  I have no doubt that because I have made changes in every aspect of my life, if I screw up on one thing, I know I am still doing a whole bunch of other things that get me closer to my goal.

Working with Sarah has been the absolute best thing I have ever done.  She is a resource for so much good advice and I take it.  She coaches me on how to exercise properly, we talk about getting rid of toxins and how important that is.  We are accountable to each other because we have both made a commitment…all for my benefit.

A quick list of easy changes you can make today…right now are:

• Drink at least one half of your body weight in ounces of water each day.  So if you weigh 200 pounds, drink 100 oz of water each day. Just do it!

• Walk for half an hour each day at a moderately quick pace.  I have learned that walking at a fast pace outdoors (nature absorbs stress) for half an hour burns more fat than trying to run.  Just do it!

• Cut out sweets and anything made with white flour.  This is the time to get serious.  If you really want to loose weight you have to make better food choices.  This is not easy, especially if you are a habitual food eater…I have had to divorce myself from my love affair with movie theatre popcorn.  The point to recognize is that there is always a better food choice.  I still eat popcorn…but have a hot air popper at home now.

• Eat at least one litre of greens per day.  What is that?  Easy, fill a four cup measuring cup with baby spinach leaves and make a salad.  Lucky me, I happen to love baby spinach leaves in a salad.  I add all sorts of great things to make it even better, like raw pumpkin seeds, mandarin orange pieces, goats cheese, low fat feta cheese, sunflower seeds, onions, cucumber, sprouts and so on.  I use Renee’s salad dressings and find that one table spoon is enough.  I have eaten a spinach salad pretty much every single day since I started this Quest.  Spinach is so good for you…it’s like free food.

Please let me know if you have any questions and in the next update I will share some interesting news about some of the places in our area that have become a fantastic resource for me.
