The Highlands Trailblazers
The Highlands Trailblazers is a local Cross Country Ski club consisting of over 200 members. The Trailblazers offer ski programs to people ages 5 to 95. The Highlands Trailblazers are based out of Highlands Nordic, one of the premier cross country ski facilities in Ontario.

The athletes who competed in this past weekend’s Ontario Midget Championships represented three sections of the Highlands Trailblazers club. Ryan Jackson, age 8, is part of the Highlands Trailblazer’s Jackrabbit Program. The Jackrabbits is an 8 week cross country ski program designed to teach children how to ski. Using fun and enthusiasm the program helps children to appreciate skiing as a life long sport.

Eleven of the athletes, ages 10 to 13, are from the Highlands Trailblazers Track Attack program. The Track Attack program introduces youth to competition. The program is designed to help young Nordic skiers to continue to refine their technique, and gives them the opportunity to compete in regional and provincial races. There is a strong emphasis on having fun while also striving to reach their personal best. The Track Attack athletes start training in October and finish their season in March.

The last two athletes to make up the team are both 13 years old and are part of the Highlands Trailblazer’s Southern Ontario Divisional team. The SOD team is the next step up from the Track Attack program. The SOD team consists of teenagers ages 13 to 18 who train from October until the end of March.
