Saving Heritage Buildings from Neglect:  Individual Stories of Preservation.  Heritage Week takes place this year from February 15th to the 21st.  As in past years, the Collingwood branch of the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario and the town’s Heritage Committee will jointly sponsor a presentation.

This year the theme is “Saving Heritage Buildings from Neglect:  Individual Stories of Preservation”.  The presentation will feature five speakers from the local community.  The event will focus on the restoration work at four heritage properties in Collingwood, with the property owners discussing their work and some of the challenges in their conservation efforts.  The buildings featured include the Tremont and the Ditson house; two 1890 buildings nearly lost to demolition, as well as the Joseph Lawrence House and 282 Ontario St; two properties that were recently designated under the Ontario Heritage Act.

The evening will also feature a presentation by Cathy de Ruiter, staff resource for the Heritage Committee, on the steps to Designate a Heritage Property. She will also discuss the Heritage Municipal Register.  Cathy will outline the eligibility requirements for the recently passed Heritage Tax Refund Program as well.  A question and answer session will follow.

This event is free and open to the public.  It takes place in the Town Hall Council Chambers beginning at 7pm on Thursday, February 18.
