Create a Harvest Bowl (Posted On: Tuesday, October 13, 2009)

During a recent visit to Crock a Doodle Studio in the Village at Blue, paint your own pottery studio, I had the opportunity to create fabulous Harvest Bowl using some of our local foliage to create the leaf impressions.

The process was really quick and easy, thanks to the help from Marlena, and the results exceeded my expectations.

Step by Step

  • Gather a few leaves.  Make sure they don’t have any rips or tears in them and are of a nice shape.  Oak and Maple were my choice.
  • Wipe unpainted ceramic (bisque) harvest bowl with a damp sponge to remove any dust.
  • Select your paint colours.
  • Paint a base coat if you desire, or you can use the natural colour of the bisque.
  • Paint the backs of the leaves with paint and use the painted leaves as your ‘stamp’.
  • Carefully press the painted side of the leaves onto the bowl making sure that you press all areas around the edges to ensure that you have a good leaf impression.
  • Repeat until desired number of leaf impressions are on your bowl.  Reload your leaf with paint for each new impression.
  • Paint the bottom of the bowl, I used the same colours that I used for my leaf prints.
  • Sign your piece and date it too! Or, put on a special message to the person you’ve made this masterpiece for….like ‘you’re the best mommy in the world – Love Suzie’.
  • You’re done!  The friendly and helpful staff at Crock a Doodle Studio takes over from there.  They glaze and fire your project, plus they clean up all the mess.
  • Pick up your finished and unique masterpiece the next day.

You can see a detailed technique sheet here.

The compliments I have received on my finished piece have been just great and I look forward to making a whole bunch of personalized Christmas presents at Crock a Doodle.
