Summertime is a wonderful time in Cottage Country. There is so much going on. Every small town has a Farmer's Market which features more than delicious food. Live theatre and live music are available in small theaters or outside under the stars. Many of the events are free or charge a modest admission. There are church camps for kids, concerts, potluck dinners, picnics, flea markets and so much more.

Collingwood has a number of huge events that bring thousands of people into town. The big one of course is the Elvis Festival. If you have never seen this you should come just to experience the joy and excitement in the downtown streets of Collingwood. The Elvis fans are so exuberant you will find it is catching. People of all ages come to take part and celebrate not just Elvis but music and fun.

And along with everything else there are the unique opportunities to see and purchase beautiful fine art. Many artists work all year, mostly in seclusion in their studios, to bring their works of art to local art galleries such as The Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts in Collingwood and the Owen Sound Artist Co-op Legacy gallery.  These are galleries that show the work of local artists who may not be represented by commercial galleries for one reason or another (although some of the artists are also represented by galleries). Here you have the opportunity to see largely undiscovered talent. Here is the chance to purchase an original piece of art by an up and coming artist before he/she is in the public galleries.

The Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts (BMFA) gallery has two shows this summer-The Summer Art and Gift Show in July and the Grey County Artist Gallery and Gift show in August. Over 40 artists and artisans showcase their work. You will find original paintings of fine art in all sizes, photography, pottery, handcrafted jewelry, iron sculptures, woodwork and metal work, and assorted hand made gifts such as pillows, planters, glass creations, wearable fashion, and more. It is a smorgasbord of treasures created by artists of all ages for people of all tastes. Whatever your pocketbook allows you are sure to find something you love that you must take home.

The Owen Sound Artist Co-op has an ongoing store year round. They have opened the Legacy Gallery (inside their store ) that features local artists who are not regular co-op  members. Grey County Artists new show Gallery and Gifts features the work of six fine art painters, two jewelers, and original fashions for the month of July.

If you can tear yourself away from the beaches, the Bruce Trail and our beautiful waterfalls take a few hours to visit one of these galleries that support local artists by featuring their work. Take the children along and let them experience original art created in Grey and Simcoe Counties by local artists. And who knows, you may find that special treasure that is waiting to come home with you.
