Jane Grahek, owner of Furbelows in Thornbury loves fashion. If you have ever had the pleasure of meeting Jane, you will quickly learn that her passion for fashion has not waned over the past 21 years in business. When you walk into Jane’s store, it is literally a feast for your eyes, a gourmet menu of beautiful clothes.
Her passion started at a very young age…she was born a trendsetter. Her career at Holt Renfrew at Bloor and Avenue Road in Toronto began at the ripe age of seventeen. Head of the ‘Missy Department” Jane quickly learned about the fashion industry. Jane would be constantly scolded for leaving the store floor because she was running around collecting accessories for the customers she had outfitted. Going home day after day Jane would harp to her parents, complaining that the accessories should be on the same floor as the clothing. She declared that when she opened her own store that she would only sell black clothing and accessories. Her mother promptly said,”then you should call it Furbelows”. “What’s that?” asked Jane. “The frill or flounce on the bottom of a petty coat or useless ornamentation” explained her mother. That was the beginning of Furbelows…the concept, the name and the talent were all present and accounted for.
All that was needed next was the space. After following her heart and a man up to Thornbury, she found the space at 43 Bruce Street, which she shared with Lynne Barnes. The store was called Furbelows and Adam. Through time, the name evolved to Furbelows, and the concept of the store has varied over the years. At one point the store was the first Home Décor store in the area…Jane was perhaps a little revolutionary and ahead of her time. Jane then put the focus on her real passion, fun fashion and shoes.
Over the past 21 years, Jane and her staff have built up an impressive clientele. Without whom, Jane reminds us her dream would not have been possible.
Walk into Furbelows today and you can be completely ‘Furbelated’ a term Jane has adopted when a customer has been transformed. The focus is on helping classy women be all that they can be through amazing fashion. Jane and her helpful and knowledgeable staff will dress you from head to toe and will not let you leave looking silly, trust them, you are after all the best walking advertising for Furbelows…”where did you get that gorgeous outfit”?
With her finger on the pulse of the fashion around the globe, Jane pulls in designer fashions, accessories and footwear from places like Los Angeles, the UK and France. Carrying designer lines like Dex, Sandwich, Donald J. Pliner, Nougat, Sarah Pacini to name just a few, she has everything to dress a sophisticated urbanite.
Jane and her staff are getting ready to celebrate a new milestone…Furbelows is moving to a new location, a permanent home, across the street from where they are now. The building is brand new from the ground up and this is all very exciting. The new location will be ready near the end of January 2007.
