The Gayety Theatre has been undergoing some renovations of late and Theatre Collingwood is thrilled to be one of the first to use the new, more intimate, space. Seats have been taken out to create a 200 seat lower level that will give the theatre goer a more up-close and personal experience.
Erica Angus, Executive Director, was a big fan of the a capella band The Nylons while growing up in Toronto. "Their smooth harmonies were second to none. Bringing Micah Barnes to Collingwood is a true dream come true for me, and I am excited to have this show in the renovated space" said Angus.
Having cut his teeth in the cabarets and jazz clubs of
Toronto while still a teenager, Micah Barnes became a well loved singer
songwriter on the Queen Street scene before joining The Nylons and touring the
world. Recording with the a capella pop act brought Micah into the global music
scene and landed him in Venice Beach, California where he launched a solo
career touring the U.S. This led to his #1 international club hit "Welcome To My Head" and coverage in Rolling Stone Magazine as "an Indie artist to watch".
Micah's new CD 'New York Stories' (eOne Music) pays homage to the rich musical history of "The Big Apple" with songs that describe a long distance romance using the rhythms of the Cotton Club, the Brill Building, The Apollo Theatre and classic Broadway. His CD is receiving fantastic airplay country-wide, and support from CBC Radio, after winning critical reviews and topping the iTunes Jazz charts upon release in January 2016.
The former member of The Nylons and winner of the top Jazz Act of 2014 at the Toronto Indies, is touring the country with his show "Micah Barnes - New York Stories". In this show Micah takes the audience on a musical tour of The Big Apple, starting uptown at The Apollo Theatre and The Cotton Club and moving midtown to Times Square & Broadway before landing downtown at jazz clubs Birdland and The Blue Note in The Village. The Canadian jazz crooner will be performing for the Collingwood audience classic songs from legendary New York songwriters like Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Cole Porter, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Carole King & Burt Bacharach, as well as songs from Micah’s critically acclaimed CD "New York Stories".
