FOODSTOCK is a pay-what-you-can event featuring gourmet dishes prepared by 100 of Canada’s top chefs, many from Collingwood and Thornbury including Azzurra, Tesoro, Espresso Post and Simplicity Bistro. There will also be music by the likes of Blue Rodeo’s Jim Cuddy, Hayden, Sarah Harmer and a host of others in opposition to the proposed mega quarry.
Hills of the The Headwaters are being threatened by a proposed mega quarry that will destroy valuable farmland, jeopardize fresh water and potentially devastate the environment.
The Highland Companies, backed by a multi-billion-dollar Boston hedge fund, has purchased over 7,000 acres of the richest farm land in Ontario, located in Melancthon Township, just north of Shelburne. Initially, Highland claimed that its interest was potato farming, which has been the backbone of the local economy for well over 100 years.
Recently Highland filed an application with the Minister of Natural Resources to excavate the largest quarry ever proposed in Canada. Highlands plans to blast a pit deeper than Niagara Falls, spanning 2,316 acres (initially) to extract millions of tons of limestone for the lucrative aggregate market.
On October 16th, 2011 from 11am – 5pm join 20,000 people plus 100 Canadian Chefs to taste the bounty of land threatened by the mega-Quarry in Melancthon Township, Ontario.
