ESCARPMENT CHALLENGE (Posted On: Friday, March 09, 2012)

The Peak to Peak Escarpment Challenge is more than a hike.  It’s an event, a celebration of spring on the Niagara Escarpment and a fund raiser for the Clearview Community Coalition.  Pre-register and raise tax deductible donations then join us for a fabulous day of fun on the escarpment.

Start with a continental breakfast at a lovely century farm on the edge of the escarpment, west of Duntroon,

then board the bus to the trailhead of your choice.  Hike 26 km, from Peak to Peak, or choose your challenge.  The event is a family friendly hike-a-thon with trails to suit any age or ability.  You will experience wild flower covered woodlands, spectacular views, streams cascading down hillsides, dramatic rock formations and caves.  There will be refreshment stations and opportunities to refill your water bottle along the way.
Every hiker at the Peak to Peak Escarpment Challenge will have a chance to learn something about the Niagara Escarpment, and we mean every hiker, whether it's your first time on the trail or whether you've hiked in these woods a thousand times.  We're thrilled to welcome some special guests to the final section of the Peak to Peak hike-a-thon route -- including a geologist, an ecologist, naturalists, and an archeologist who helped discover Petun Nation villages along the Niagara Escarpment.  If you have questions about the natural environment around you during the Escarpment Challenge, these specialists can answer them.  Discover more about these knowledgeable and passionate guests and how to find them on May 12 right here.

The Peak to Peak Escarpment Challenge has exciting programs for children of all ages.   Children can accompany their parent on any of the four hike options.  During the afternoon Tin Roof Global will be providing a Children’s Activity with fun and interactive water stewardship activities for children of all ages. Under a portable rainwater harvesting demonstration tent, kids will explore the world of water and the ever-increasing need for its protection.  Hands-on and educational, Tin Roof's activities will ensure that participants have a blast while increasing their understanding of water issues everywhere.

When you return to the farm you will be treated to an after party celebration including live music, a silent auction of Escarpment art, a barbeque and buffet and draws for terrific prizes.

Three musicians will entertain at our hike-a-thon after-party. Along with Collingwood’s own Aaron Garner, Juno-nominee and winner of the “Rising Star Award” Tom Barlow will take the stage, as will the soulful and talented country roots rocker -- and Collingwood local -- Romney Getty.  Learn more about Aaron’s music right here and to listen to a selection of Tom’s and Romney’s music click here.

Another group that has thrown its support behind the Peak to Peak Escarpment Challenge is the Georgian Bay Association for Creative Arts (GBACA). A number of GBACA artists have generously donated their work to be auctioned at a silent auction of Escarpment Art.  Some of the donors are artists who were fortunate to have grown up in the shadow of the Niagara Escarpment, and others have been drawn here. In all cases, the artists have been influenced by the many examples of natural beauty that are found on the Escarpment and by the dramatic land form itself. They want to see it protected.  Check peaktopeakhike to view the art that has been donated to the silent auction.

The prizes consist of Leafs tickets, hiking boots, a hiker’s GPS system, camping gear, Tilley Hats, an all-expense-paid 5-star hotel getaway, and more!  To win these prizes, you need to earn draw tickets.  The more money you raise, the more draw tickets you earn. The more draw tickets, the more chances you have to win.  Top fund raisers will have a chance to win our grand prize Fogo Island Inn getaway, a $5000 + value.  Learn more about the prizes right here.
We’re thrilled to have artists, musicians and special guests joining us at the hike-a-thon on May 12 to help us promote the need to protect the Niagara Escarpment. Hope you can join us too!
