Set to resound in the streets on August 1, the Collingwood Street Pianos will again be installed throughout Downtown Collingwood.
This is the second year for this project - a brainchild of musicians Jim Kinnear and Catherine Brown and the beautifully refurbished historical instruments will be placed at strategicn locations in downtown Collingwood including in front of the Federal Building, near Town Hall and the Simcoe Street Theatre. Visitors are encouraged to plink a tune, practice their scales or polish a Minuet for both their own enjoyment and that of passersby.
Says Kinnear: "The concept is public interaction, and we feel that music is one of the best ways to cross all cultural and language issues".
Susan Nicholson, General Manager of the Collingwood Downtown BIA, is thrilled that the pianos are returning with the continued assistance of these dedicated volunteers. Says Nicholson: "We are so lucky to have such a strong arts community in the downtown, which is not only engaging to visitors, but is also a strong economic driver. Having the street pianos will only enhance the 'total art experience' we so energetically perpetuate."
The launch of this year's Street Pianos coincides with the first ever Harbour Festival - Sidelaunch Days - being held from August 1 to 3. The festival is a three-day multi-venue, multi-recreational event celebrating the joy of being in, on, and around South Georgian Bay while commemorating the unique shipbuilding heritage of Collingwood.
Collingwood Downtown will also be bustling during the Festival with buskers, nautical themed activities for the children at the Saturday Farmers' Market and the Collingwood Arts and Music Festival at the Station/Museum. To celebrate the Street Pianos arrival, pianists will stage a 'Street Piano Jam' beginning at 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, starting at the piano in front of the Federal Building.
