|Putting your money where your mouth is. Local Charities must come up with creative ideas to raise funds that will support their Missions and Visions for the future. One of these Charities is called Breaking Down Barriers Independent Living Resource Centre. Since 1985 this organization has supported consumers with physical, sensory, emotional or intellectual disabilities. Their support groups help people achieve independence by meeting to talk about; Brain Injury Services, Diabetes, Stroke Recovery as well as accessibility and employment issues.|
They also want people to lead active lives and encourage people with disabilities to participate in Sports Club activities that include Curling, Boccia, Track & Field, and Golf.
Breaking Down Barriers is a collective voice and vision of people with disabilities from the Georgian Triangle. That voice is strong, passionate and genuine. It sends a clear and real message to everyone about the rights of residents with disabilities to rise above barriers, lead full lives and contribute to their community.
For 14 years now Breaking Down Barriers has been raising funds with their Annual Box Lunch Event – Lunch is delivered throughout the Georgian Triangle. Imagine - lunch delivered right to your door for only $6.00! You get a GREAT lunch made with local fruits and veggies, not to mention a homemade butter tart and oh yes, there is also your choice of a vegetarian or ham and cheese sandwich. We support the 100-mile rule and have ensured that all products are obtained from local area businesses. As well as getting this awesome lunch you are supporting people with disabilities at the same time!
We know they had a pilot project this year that offered a Gourmet Lunch for $10.00 which included a roasted vegetable sandwich with goat cheese and pesto mayonnaise on multi-grain bread plus; 2 homemade cookies, I mini water, a fruit, cut up celery, carrots and peppers with dip. There was a limited quantity of 100 sandwiches and they sold out within one week of canvassing for orders!
They have even found a way to support another organization through this fundraising project. People are encouraged to donate lunches that will be distributed to people in need and include the Food Bank.
With a lofty goal of 2,000 lunches it is hoped that they will raise over $10,000 to support their goals. More than 90 volunteers will be at hand and Canvassers will be asking you to support this event by purchasing or donating a box lunch on October 23rd. Let us help make this happen for an organization that makes such a powerful impact on our community!
