Birds-eye view of Collingwood (Posted On: Tuesday, June 10, 2014)

If you would like to get up in the world over Collingwood, look no further than four new books published by local author-photographer, George Czerny.

"Eyes over Collingwood" is a series of four books, self-published simultaneously by Czerny and providing readers with a unique, bird's-eye perspective of this southern Georgian Bay community.

"If you can't pinpoint your house in my low-level, colour photographs, you should be able to pick out your neighbourhood," said Czerny.

A retired newspaper publisher, Czerny said his aerial photographs provide an opportunity to view Collingwood in an unusual way. Some pages provide a close-up look at neighbourhoods, others an over-all view. Czerny's books also contain written descriptions for his colour photographs.

Initially, Czerny planned to produce one coffee-table-type book with about 100 photographs. He decided to produce four, smaller books instead to make the price, per book, more affordable and to focus more on specific areas of Collingwood in each book.

As a result, he has published northern, eastern, south-central and western books which provide close-up views of many neighbourhoods and some well-known buildings and areas. The western book includes some photographs of parts of northeastern Blue Mountains. The eastern book includes some photographs of parts of northwestern Wasaga Beach.

The "Eyes over Collingwood" books, hopes Czerny, will find a following among those who want to see their community from a different angle, are looking for a very unique gift, or want an unusual souvenir. "I don't think anybody else offers books with photographs such as these," he said.

Czerny's self-published books are available for purchase on the internet by clicking here  One only has to click on that site and type in George Czerny in the search space. That will bring up all of Czerny's Blurb.ca-published books, along with preview, pricing and purchase details.

The books are available in softcover, image-wrap hardcover and dustjacket hardcover versions. As well, at the blurb.ca site, it is possible to preview pages from each book.

"Eyes over Collingwood" books range in price from $33.00 to $35.00 in softcover and from $46.00 to $53.00 in dustjacket hardcover, with tax and shipping costs additional.

Czerny notes that the world of book publishing has changed immensely in the past 10 years and many authors now offer their self-published products at internet bookstores.

A past-president of the Collingwood Chamber of Commerce and a past-president of the Rotary Club of Collingwood, Czerny says he shares his pride of community through these "Eyes over Collingwood" books. He also notes that his photographs preserve the history of an area in a pictorial way.

He plans to offer his books for sale at the Collingwood Farmers' Market in the near future, as well as sell them and copies of his photographs in person around town. He can be reached at 705-293-1569.

"I'm often out and about town", said Czerny adding "so I'm happy to take a book order".

In recent years, Czerny has written and self-published "The Collingwood Shipyards", "A Salute to Sidelaunchings", "Making Tracks" and "Collingwood's Walk of History", all on the blurb.ca system.

He is also the author of a travel guide, "George's Georgian Bay", which he published in 2004.

Czerny plans to continue his "Eyes over" aerial-photographs theme by producing books with bird's-eye views of neighbouring communities.

George Czerny lives with his wife Nancy at 50 McKean Crescent in Collingwood.
