For six years, residents of Bay Haven Nursing Home have created and maintained a 'Postcard Club' This club meets regularly to write and read correspondence (usually in the form of Postcards) received from other Nursing Homes and Retirement Homes from around the World including Scotland, The United Kingdom and British Columbia.
What is special about the postcards is most of them are handmade by the residents of the homes they are sent from. Bay Haven's Postcard Club hand makes postcards that are local in nature; usually with some mention or picture depicting Collingwood and the surrounding area. The Postcard Club initiated contact six years ago with the Home that write to them and have even dubbed themselves 'The Happy Oldies' when signing off on their postcards.
In July 2015, the Postcard Club wrote to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II offering her warm wishes and congratulations as she becomes the longest-reigning British Monarch in history. Last week, the Postcard Club was ecstatic to learn that The Queen had responded with a personalized letter of thanks, signed by one of The Queen's eleven ladies-in-waiting.
The Club was very touched to read how personalized the letter was and how appreciative Her Majesty had been towards the homemade postcard. Bay Haven marked the 63-year reign of Queen Elizabeth II with a Canadian Citizenship Reaffirmation Ceremony on Wednesday, September 9 at 2:00pm.
