BabyFish Is Making A Splash! (Posted On: Friday, February 09, 2007)

This is the story of a baby fish, actually a baby girl, nicknamed ‘Guppy’ long before she was even born. Named, in fact, from her very first ultrasound! Not long after that, her mother-to-be began to search high and low for the perfect baby carrier – something that would hold baby close, snuggly-tight, with a world-class view from mum or dad’s front. A carrier that would offer hands-free versatility for parents, security, comfort and, of course, great style...

This is the story of how new mum, Andie Fischer, began her amazing baby wear design career. After finding a gaping hole in the available baby carriers, Andie spent hours sewing prototypes until the perfect baby carrier (and its perfect cargo, daughter Ava Grace) was born. Christened the “Uppy Guppy”, it has been an instant hit with family, friends, neighbours, and even strangers. In fact, at their first appearance at the Today’s Parent Baby and Toddler Show in Toronto, they sold out before the end of the first day. Since then, they’ve been asked to appear at a number of baby and parents’ shows across Canada!

Andie explains this instant hit, “Baby carriers or ‘slings’ is an ancient practice that’s common to cultures around the world. Research shows that babies actually cry less often because they feel secure, colic symptoms can be reduced, and fussy babies are soothed. I’m thrilled by the reaction of other mums and dads to our line – the other day we were in a restaurant in Collingwood, and while my husband, Chris, was walking Ava around in her Uppy Guppy, with her new Fins (baby legwarmers), several people stopped him to ask about the products!”

The BabyFish line appeal is based not just in practicality, but fashion, too. “That was the whole idea at the beginning,” explains Andie. “I wanted a carrier that would be as attractive as it is practical. Now, we’re looking at working with fabric designers, looking at fashion trend forecasting, and it seems to be working. Now, mums are buying multiple Uppy Guppies, to have different looks. And, dads are loving the camouflage look, and the corduroy slings with fun fur lining. We’re looking at using suede and leather looks, down the line.”

The Uppy Guppy comes in a full range of sizes for all shapes of mums and dads, and will comfortably carry babies up to 35 pounds. Designed to be both practical and stylish, Uppy Guppy allows the ‘Big Fish’ to carry baby fish conveniently hands-free, yet always close to the heart. All Uppy Guppys are handmade, combining colours and patterns for stylish contrast, and handy reversibility. Washable, soft, cuddly, fashionable and practical, Uppy Guppy is a must-have for all parents. Grandparents, too!

Andie Fischer is an elementary and high school teacher in Collingwood, who incorporated her baby wear design company, BabyFish Inc., in August 2006. Supported by her husband Chris, mum Joani and daughter Ava, Andie is proud to be making Uppy Guppys for Canadian families.
